Magog

Magog is a city of 28,312 residents (2021 census), the seat of the MRC de Memphrémagog in the Eastern Townships (Estrie), where the Magog River flows out of Lake Memphremagog. A little over an hour and a half from Montreal via Highway 10 and about 30 minutes from Sherbrooke, it suits families, retirees and remote workers who want the lake and the services of a real town.

Daily life revolves around rue Principale and its shops. Formed in 2002 by the merger of Magog, Omerville and the Canton de Magog, the city blends urban neighbourhoods and country roads. Magog’s hospital, with an emergency department, shares its site with the CLSC (local community health centre) on rue Saint-Patrice Est. Families have access to several elementary schools, including Brassard-Saint-Patrice and des Deux-Soleils, to École secondaire de La Ruche and, in English, to Princess Elizabeth Elementary School.

Outdoors and nature in Magog

Lake Memphremagog sets the tone: Plage des Cantons, strolls at Pointe Merry and cruises that reveal Mount Orford and Mount Owl’s Head. The Marais de la Rivière-aux-Cerises offers observation trails on the edge of downtown, and La Montagnarde bike path heads toward Orford and Eastman. The Mont-Orford ski resort is about a dozen kilometres away.

Culture and local flavours

Le Vieux Clocher, a 400-seat hall, presents shows year-round, and the Centre d’arts visuels houses the Musée international d’art naïf. In late summer, the Fête des vendanges Magog-Orford brings winemakers and artisans together at Pointe Merry. Among local addresses, Vignoble Le Cep d’Argent makes sparkling wines using the traditional method, La Memphré microbrewery brews right in town and Bleu Lavande grows its fields on rue Principale Ouest.
