Sutton

Sutton is a town of about 4,500 residents in the MRC de Brome-Missisquoi, at the foot of the Sutton Mountains (monts Sutton), in the Estrie administrative region and the Eastern Townships tourist region. It is about an hour and a half from Montreal via Highway 10 and about 1 hour 25 minutes from Sherbrooke. Sutton draws mountain lovers, families and cottagers.

The heart of Sutton is a heritage village, with its 1859 town hall and the shops on rue Principale. The territory also includes the hamlets of Sutton Junction and Glen Sutton. École de Sutton brings a French-language elementary school and an English-language school together under one roof, and the nearest high school, Massey-Vanier, is in Cowansville. The village has its own CLSC (local community health centre), and the nearest hospital is the Hôpital Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins, in Cowansville.

Outdoors and nature in Sutton

The Mont Sutton resort, opened in 1960, has some sixty runs, many of them through the woods. In summer, it switches to mountain biking, zip-lining and disc golf. The Parc d’environnement naturel de Sutton offers about fifty kilometres of marked trails, with its summits and Spruce and Mohawk lakes. Its trails connect to the Green Mountains Nature Reserve (Réserve naturelle des Montagnes-Vertes), home to Round Top, Sutton’s highest point at 962 m. In Glen Sutton, Au Diable Vert offers trails, kayaking on the Missisquoi and mountain accommodations.

Culture and local flavours

The Arts Sutton gallery, founded in 1980, presents about a dozen exhibitions a year, and the Musée des communications et d’histoire de Sutton tells the village’s story. At the table, Auberge Sutton Brouërie brews its own beers on rue Principale Sud, and Vignoble Domaine Bresee has been growing grapes on Sutton’s slopes since 1999.
