North Hatley is a village municipality of 675 residents (2021 census) in the MRC de Memphrémagog, in the Eastern Townships (Estrie), at the northern tip of Lake Massawippi. About 20 minutes from Sherbrooke, 15 minutes from Magog and about 2 hours from Montreal, the village attracts people who love heritage, waterfront living and good food.
Founded in 1897, North Hatley grew up around a natural amphitheatre that slopes down to the lake. From the late 19th century, summer residents built large homes here, several of which are now inns and B&Bs. The village core brings together art galleries, antique dealers, boutiques, restaurants and the municipal library. Children can attend the English-language North Hatley Elementary school, and Sherbrooke, about 20 minutes away, offers hospitals, high schools, cégeps and universities.
Lake Massawippi is enjoyed from Pleasant View beach, Parc Dreamland on the waterfront and the village wharf. Kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing fill summer days, and the road along the lake leads to Ayer’s Cliff, at the other end, in about 20 minutes. For relaxation, Solstice sauna and the Manoir Hovey spa round out the options.
Manoir Hovey, a member of Relais & Châteaux, combines an inn, a spa, the restaurant Le Hatley and the Tap Room. In August, the Festival de jazz de North Hatley livens up the village, and the country market showcases local producers. La Cie Vilandré, a family pub and microbrewery open year-round, brews its beers on site. Nearby, Vignoble Sainte-Catherine in Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley and Domaine Bergeville in the Canton de Hatley extend the discovery.
The housing stock is dominated by detached homes, often older: large heritage residences, village homes within walking distance of the lake and waterfront properties on Lake Massawippi, which are in limited supply. A significant share of dwellings are second homes. The village appeals to cottagers, retirees and Sherbrooke professionals. A property’s value depends on its heritage character, its view of or access to the lake and its proximity to the village core.
North Hatley offers a heritage setting on Lake Massawippi, an elementary school, restaurants and galleries, with Sherbrooke’s services about 20 minutes away.
North Hatley is about 18 km from Sherbrooke, roughly a 20-minute drive.
In North Hatley, you can enjoy Lake Massawippi (Pleasant View beach, Parc Dreamland), the art galleries, Manoir Hovey and the jazz festival in August.
North Hatley mainly has detached homes, including large heritage residences, village homes and a few waterfront properties on Lake Massawippi.
