Lac-Brome (Knowlton)

Lac-Brome is a town of about 5,900 residents in the MRC de Brome-Missisquoi, in the Estrie administrative region and the Eastern Townships tourist region, gathered around Brome Lake and its main village, Knowlton. It is about an hour and a half from Montreal via Highway 10 and about 1 hour 5 minutes from Sherbrooke. Lac-Brome appeals to cottagers, retirees and families who love a village with well-preserved Victorian heritage.

The Town of Lac-Brome was created in 1971 by merging seven villages and hamlets: Knowlton, Foster, Fulford, Bondville, East Hill, Iron Hill and West Brome. Knowlton is where most of the shops, cafés and services are. Children attend École Saint-Édouard, in French, or Knowlton Academy, in English. The nearest high school, Massey-Vanier, is in Cowansville, as is the Hôpital Brome-Missisquoi-Perkins.

Brome Lake, covering about 14.5 km², is at the centre of local life. Douglass Beach in Knowlton and Parc Tiffany in Foster, with its boat launch, provide access to the lake. The town maintains eleven parks and about 15 km of public trails, for walking and cycling in summer, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. Conservation Lac-Brome also offers a paddling route through the Quilliams Creek wetland.

Culture and local flavours

The Musée Lac-Brome, run by the Brome County Historical Society (founded in 1897), holds an original Fokker D.VII aircraft. Théâtre Lac-Brome presents a varied program, and Knowlton hosts a film festival every August and a literary festival every October. At the table, the Canards du Lac Brome shop in Knowlton, Vignoble Courville in Fulford and Auberge Knowlton, built in 1849, are well-established addresses.
