Georgeville is a village in the Canton de Stanstead (Stanstead Township), a municipality of 1,148 residents (2021 census) in the MRC de Memphrémagog, in the Eastern Townships (Estrie), on the east shore of Lake Memphremagog. About 20 minutes south of Magog, about 50 minutes from Sherbrooke and about 2 hours from Montreal, it draws people looking for a heritage village on the water, away from the bustle.
The village’s history began around 1797, when Moses Copp set up a ferry across the lake, hence its first name, Copp’s Ferry. That past can still be read in the landscape: the wharf, St. George’s Anglican Church (1866), white Greek Revival houses and a large green at the centre of the village, bordered by the general store. Open year-round, the store doubles as a fine food shop, with bread, homemade dishes and local products. For school, the hospital and major shopping, Magog is about 20 minutes away.
Everything starts with the lake. According to Tourisme Memphrémagog, the Georgeville wharf offers one of the finest views of Lake Memphremagog, with the Abbaye de Saint-Benoît-du-Lac on the opposite shore. Out on the water, by boat or kayak, the view opens onto Mount Orford and Mount Owl’s Head. The township’s rolling roads are good for cycling and lead, in about 15 minutes, to the Narrows covered bridge in Fitch Bay.
Heritage is discovered on foot: St. George’s Church, the Pioneers’ Garden (jardin des Pionniers), Bullock Cemetery and its low schist walls, and the village’s former brick school, now a private residence. The Canton de Stanstead heritage tour then continues by car to Fitch Bay. For food, the general store is the village address, and Magog’s restaurants and vineyards, including Vignoble Le Cep d’Argent, are about 20 minutes away.
The housing stock consists mainly of heritage homes in the village, waterfront properties with access to Lake Memphremagog, estates on the heights with views of the water and the mountains, and hobby farms in the back country. The area appeals to cottagers, retirees and families looking for calm. Value comes from water access, lake views and the historic character of the houses.
No. Georgeville is one of the two villages of the Canton de Stanstead, along with Fitch Bay, in the MRC de Memphrémagog in the Eastern Townships. The Canton de Stanstead is separate from the town of Stanstead.
