Bolton refers to two neighbouring municipalities in the Eastern Townships, both in the Estrie region: Bolton-Est (about 1,100 residents, MRC de Memphrémagog) and Bolton-Ouest (about 730 residents, MRC de Brome-Missisquoi), on either side of Mont Glen. The area is about 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes from Montreal, and less than an hour from Sherbrooke from Bolton-Est. It is a territory for people who want large wooded spaces, quiet lakes and nature every day.
Bolton-Est is organized around two villages, Bolton-Centre and South Bolton, in the valley of the Missisquoi Nord River. Its town hall, set in Bolton-Centre on land acquired in 1867, and the former St-Patrick Anglican church, now a community centre, reflect its heritage. Bolton-Ouest, even more rural, consists largely of natural areas. Students attend schools in neighbouring municipalities, depending on their address: Lac-Brome, Cowansville, Eastman or Magog. The nearest emergency departments are in Magog and Cowansville. In summer, a public market is held on Saturday mornings at Parc Terrio, in Bolton-Est.
Bolton-Est has three main lakes, Lake Nick, Long Lake and Trousers Lake, and the Missisquoi Nord River runs through it from north to south. The Sablière trail, a 2.4 km loop in Parc Terrio, is open year-round, and the Ruisseaux trail connects to Mont Foster on the Sentiers de l’Estrie network. The Green Mountains Nature Reserve (Réserve naturelle des Montagnes-Vertes) extends partly over both municipalities, and Mont Glen dominates the landscape between Bolton-Est and Bolton-Ouest.
At the foot of the Missisquoi River falls, Spa Bolton offers relaxation in a natural setting. Le Rucher boltonnois, a social economy organization founded in 2018, runs a bistro on Saturdays and hosts gatherings such as the Café-Philo. Heritage also shows in the area’s churches, including Holy Trinity in South Bolton, consecrated in 1860.
The Bolton market consists mainly of large properties: wooded estates, hobby farms, country homes and cottages, as well as lakefront properties in Bolton-Est. In Bolton-Ouest, the subdivision bylaw sets minimum lot sizes of one hectare or more, depending on altitude and sector, which preserves the wooded character of the territory. Cottagers, remote workers and retirees come here for privacy, views and nature. Lot size, lake access and road maintenance drive a property’s value.
They are two separate municipalities. Bolton-Est is part of the MRC de Memphrémagog and includes the villages of Bolton-Centre and South Bolton, while Bolton-Ouest, more rural, is part of the MRC de Brome-Missisquoi, near Lac-Brome.
Bolton-Ouest is about 1 hour 35 minutes from Montreal and Bolton-Est about 1 hour 40 minutes, via Highway 10. Bolton-Est is about 50 minutes from Sherbrooke.
Students in Bolton-Est and Bolton-Ouest attend schools in Lac-Brome, Cowansville, Eastman or Magog, depending on their address. The nearest emergency departments are in Magog and Cowansville.
In Bolton, you will mainly find wooded estates, country homes, hobby farms, cottages and properties on Lake Nick, Long Lake and Trousers Lake.
