Cookshire-Eaton is a town of about 5,500 residents in the MRC du Haut-Saint-Fran\u00e7ois, in the Estrie administrative region and the Eastern Townships tourist region.<\/strong> The heart of Cookshire is about 30 minutes from downtown Sherbrooke and about 2 hours 20 minutes from Montreal. It is a choice for people who want space and real countryside, with services within easy reach.<\/p>\n

Living in Cookshire-Eaton<\/h2>\n

Created in 2002 by the merger of Cookshire and Eaton, the town covers nearly 300 km\u00b2 of forest and farmland, built around three village cores: Cookshire, Johnville and Sawyerville. For elementary school, there is \u00c9cole Saint-Camille in Cookshire, \u00c9cole Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix in Johnville, and Cookshire Elementary and Sawyerville Elementary in English. High school students attend Polyvalente Louis-Saint-Laurent in East Angus or, in English, Alexander Galt Regional High School in Sherbrooke, among others. The town has its own CLSC (local community health centre), and the nearest emergency department is at the CHUS H\u00f4pital Fleurimont, about 30 minutes away.<\/p>\n

Outdoors and nature in Cookshire-Eaton<\/h2>\n

The Eaton River flows through Sawyerville and Cookshire. Two covered bridges tell the story of the area: the John-Cook bridge, built in 1868, at the end of an easy 3 km loop from the village, and the McDermott bridge, from 1886, still open to traffic. Parc \u00e9coforestier de Johnville offers 5.8 km of trails open year-round, and a 14.9 km bike path links Sawyerville to Saint-Isidore-de-Clifton from May to September.<\/p>\n

Culture and local flavours<\/h2>\n

Named one of the C\u0153urs villageois (village hearts) by Tourisme Cantons-de-l’Est, which calls it the village of four steeples, Cookshire-Eaton can also be explored along the Chemin des Cantons and its Loyalist heritage. In Eaton Corner, the museum occupies a Congregational church built in 1841 and the Academy next door, two heritage buildings. In August, the Cookshire Fair brings together horses, tractors and midway rides. Three places to remember: Les Mal-Aim\u00e9s, a farm restaurant listed in the Michelin Guide, Ferme Boucherie Le Sabot d’Or, which raises red deer, and Cidrerie Pomme Sauvage.<\/p>\n
