Fitch Bay is a village in the Canton de Stanstead (Stanstead Township), a municipality of 1,148 residents (2021 census) in the MRC de Memphr\u00e9magog, in the Eastern Townships (Estrie), near the bay of the same name on Lake Memphremagog.<\/strong> About 25 minutes from Magog, about 50 minutes from Sherbrooke and about 2 hours from Montreal, it suits people looking for countryside, water and space.<\/p>\n

Fitch Bay is home to the Canton de Stanstead town hall, set in a former Adventist church built in 1866. The village remains small: a few old houses, including an ancestral home topped with a witch-shaped weathervane, Brookside Cemetery and country roads winding between the hills. The township is bordered by Lake Memphremagog to the west and Lac Lovering to the north. For the hospital, schools and big-box stores, Magog is about 25 minutes away.<\/p>\n

Fitch Bay, which opens onto Lake Memphremagog, lends itself to kayaking, fishing and recreational boating, and boats are moored near the village. The township’s rolling roads appeal to cyclists, and the Tomifobia Nature Trail, 19 km of path between Ayer’s Cliff and Beebe, is about 20 minutes away.<\/p>\n

Culture and local flavours<\/h2>\n

The Narrows covered bridge is the village’s symbol. Built in 1881 by Charles and Alexander McPherson, of Georgeville, it spans the bay at its narrowest point, along Route 247. Slated for demolition in the 1970s, it was saved thanks to a citizen campaign, and a modern bridge was built beside it. It is one of the few covered bridges in Quebec to cross part of a lake. The township’s heritage tour then leads to Georgeville, where the general store offers bread, homemade dishes and local products.<\/p>\n
